Pergolas
Pergolas & Craftsman Syle went together in the 1920's and they are still a nice addition to any home.
Gustav Stickley, a leading figure of the Craftsman movement in America liked to include a pergoal in almost all of his designs. Please remember he was designing homes before the arrival of air conditioning, so an outdoor space, shaded by vines, was a special amenity. Even nowdays they make nice outside comfort areas.
We have collected a number of Stickley's books and articles and hope to scan and publish some of his writings about the proper design and construction of pergolas.
We have seen elaborate pergoals where the posts were carved and the structures were very fancy. Of course many pergolas are very simple.
An Ebay search for "Pergola" brings up a mixed bag of items. Pergolas seem to be featured on postcards and shown in paintings. They also show up on toys and other odd items, including plans. We have also seen pergola plans for sale on other sites. The problem with pergola plans is that I would not feel confident recommending them until after I had tried them out myself. I have had some practice writing instructions and it's not as easy as it looks. For example, I wrote a site about how to replace a water heater. The "big box" home improvement website covered the subject on a single page. It took me ten pages, plus pictures, plus thousands more words. I suspect plans are much the same way.
Listed below are some of the Ebay active auctions for pergolas. Clicking on one of the links will take you directly to that auction on Ebay.
